Overview
· Comp@ss is an Information System that manages the “Operations” business functions of a typical Maritime Shipping Agency.
· Comp@ss is designed to serve other business functions of the Shipping Agency such as the Sales, Marketing, and the Financial functions. It also serves the top management…
· Comp@ss serves the other business functions through its integration capabilities that allow Comp@ss to integrate with any other party.
· Comp@ss provides two types of communication with other parties:
1. Using XML Web-Services.
2. Using SQL 2005 Service Broker (Communicates with other SQL 2005 Servers/Databases)
· Comp@ss handles Marine Operations, Inward, Outward, Shipping Accounts, Cargo, Claims, Master’s requests etc…
· Comp@ss manages the flow of the operations through applying its powerful “Workflow” mechanism.
· Comp@ss handles data input and output using either the standard way (screens and reports), or using its built-in EDI functionality. Features
· Working Off-Line
1. For a selective set of functionality which do not share resources used to perform transactions and do not use a centralized serial. “Comp@ss user can perform the functionality locally off line on his machine and when the he later connects to the server he can synchronize his work”.
2. System goes off-line either due to a user request or upon connection failure.
· Security up to row and cell levels
Comp@ss supports two types of security:
1. Object Security, which is to secure the systems objects such as screens and reports up to the cell level.
2. Data Security, which is to secure the data itself.
Both types of security support delegations and inheritance.
· Bilingual and Multilingual
1. Comp@ss enables users to save descriptive data in two different languages (“Primary” and “Secondary” languages) at the same time. This what is called the “Bilingual” technique, which enables the user to present data (in the reports and on the screens) in two different languages at the same time.
2. Comp@ss enables users to use different languages as the “Primary” and “Secondary” languages. This what is called the “Multilingual” technique. Currently, Comp@ss supports Arabic and English.
· Auditing up to row and cell levels
1. Comp@ss enables auditing all the transactions up to row and cell levels.
2. Comp@ss auditing secures registering all records modifications, actors, dates, times and reasons in a form of historical lists.
3. Super-users can setup a pre-defined set of reasons to be used for the auditing.
· Workflow Support
1. Comp@ss supports a workflow mechanism that ties each set of transactions that are related to a specific business function task in order to follow up their execution.
2. Comp@ss workflow mechanism enables the user to follow-up the execution of a task, measure the execution time, control and follow-up tasks actors.
3. Comp@ss Workflow is based on Microsoft Windows Vista Workflow Foundation (WWF).
· E.D.I. Support
1. The main concern of the EDI activities in a typical shipping agency is the “Cargo Manifest”. The manifest is usually communicated between the shipping agency in the port of loading (POL) with the shipping agency in the port of discharging (POD) either directly or in-directly through the owners.
2. “Cargo Status and Movements” could also be communicated between the shipping agency and the vessel owners using EDI.
3. Using EDI to communicate the manifest or the cargo information in all the cases is not a must. Sometimes, the EDI technology is not implemented at one of the parties.
· Support both Liner and Tramping Business
1. Liner business is the type of business where vessels sail between specified ports on a regular basis according to a regular pre-set schedule. In this type of business, the carrier is always a “Shipping Line” which directly hires the “Shipping Agency” to act for or on behalf of the Line.
2. Tramping business is the type of business where vessels do not operate under a regular schedule. It calls at any port where cargo may be available. In this type of business, the carrier is always the “Operator” that operates the vessel.
a) The “Owner” of the vessel himself.
b) The “Charterer” of the vessel, which is the person employing the vessel according to the “Charter Party”. The “Operator” of the vessel is normally the one who hires the “Shipping Agency” to act for or on behalf of him.
